It's only been a little over a week since we dropped Kaylee off at college and I have already found several things she left behind. When we packed her up to make the four hour trek to Knoxville, I asked her many, many times... "Are you sure you have everything?"... "Yes.", she said. I knew she didn't. Good thing I have a Staples right around the corner.
Of course you know Staples is your one stop shop for all kinds of school and office supplies, but did you know they also carry shipping supplies and have an in-house UPS desk that is open 7 days a week?! Yeah, neither did I.
I wish I had known about all the awesome mail and ship services Staples offers, before we moved Kaylee to Knoxville. Lucky for us, she didn't have a huge crap ton of stuff, just the basic essentials, so it mostly fit in the back of our car, but I can still use the mail and ship service to send her care packages and the few things she forgot to pack.
From boxes and shipping labels to packing tape and bubble wrap, Staples has you covered, but before you start packing and send them on their way, here's a few tips I picked up along the way... mostly from doing it wrong.
Dear College kid, First, don't take every single stitch of clothing you own. It's still warm out, you don't need that parka just yet. You will be back for Winter break, you can change out your wardrobe then. Second, make a list of what you already have vs what you will need. Such as, I have one stick of deodorant, I will probably need at least xx sticks of deodorant, until I come back home and raid Mom's medicine cabinet for more. Third, take more than two towels, more like one for every day of the week or at least every day you don't feel like washing clothes (or bathing). Your Mom doesn't work at your college, so you will be on your own and using dirty, stank ass towels can cause yeast infections. You don't want that. Fourthly, have fun, but not too much fun. Have just enough fun to make some new memories with new friends, but not so much fun that you have to have your night recalled to you by aforementioned new friends. Sloppy drunk is never cute. This will be an amazing time in your life, but a very difficult transition for your Mom. Remember, she was patient with you when you were young and just learning how to do things, so return the kindness to her now, as she learns to adjust to you being gone. Whatever you do, don't ignore her texts, because she will assume you are dead or worse and will become like a crazy detective and start looking on FB for your room mate and message anyone with a similar name and you just don't want that, so text your Mom back, let her know you're alive and maybe throw an "I miss you" in there. She will greatly appreciate your effort and maybe even send you a really nice care package... maybe.
