One of my very favorite things to do during the spring is to throw a quick lunch in the cooler, pack up the kids and head out on "adventures". Dad is captain, I am navigator and keeper of all things important and the kids are just along for the ride, stuck in the back, kind of like the two guys in the balcony on The Muppet Show, Statler & Waldorf, heckling Dad and I as we reminisce over the "good old days"... before we had kids. We usually end up just driving through the nature park near our house. It's miles and miles of ups and downs and twisty turny narrow roads that are very heavily wooded. It's beautiful, especially at dusk, with the sun streaming through the trees. There is always a deer or two to be seen and plenty of song birds to be heard and then there are the kids... One of them asking "How much longer?" the other one saying "My music is better than yours." and various other "important" stuff. The Captain gives me a knowing glance and I know what's up... I crank the radio and drown their sweet little voices right out, but right before I do, I give them my own version of the famous Clark Griswold speech, explaining to them that we are so far in the woods it would take them a week to get back to our house and that when they finally do get back home, we will have moved across town, leaving no forwarding address. They are not amused, which amuses me immensely. Parents: 1 Kids: 0 "Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse" What To Pack When Going On An "Adventure" The best thing about adventuring is that there are no rules! I am not the most organized person in the world. I am flighty and random and I like to do things on a whim, but it works for me. So when I get the notion to strike out on an adventure, I need things to be quick and handy and the first thing I usually grab is snacks. I usually just pick up a few random things off the counter, shove them in a bag and GO, which is all fine and good until you get about 5 miles up into the park and realize all you packed, for your whole family to eat was 2 bananas, a baggie of Cheerios and a butterscotch Snack Pack... with no spoon. This is where you begin to pray to the Gods that you don't run into any crazy, nature park living, axe murdering, hobos who will kill you, unless you have the usual picnic fare of sammies and chips. How bad would it be to be known as the family that was brutally murdered because of your poor picnic packing skills... If only there was some way to pack a picnic appropriate lunch without all the planning and effort. If only.....
