A very dear friend of mine is expecting her first baby in late November or early December and when I got the invite to her shower, I knew I had to get her something that was fun, useful and not horribly expensive, so my Mom and I were out shopping for baby goodies, without much luck and she asked me... "What did you get at your shower that was most useful?" and my instant response was "diapers".
Diapers are a great gift for new Moms as they are most definitely going to be used and they go so fast, you can never have too many. This diaper cake is a fun afternoon project and you can even enlist the help of the older ones so it can also be an inadvertent bonding moment as well.
There is really nothing to it, just roll the diapers into a small cylindrical shape, secure with a small rubber band and then stack them together, side by side and secure them all with a larger rubber band. It helps to have an extra set of hands for this step.
The number of diapers you arrange depends on how large you want your diaper cake to be. I started with seven and worked another layer around that for the bottom layer. The top layer was made from the leftovers. I used size 2 diapers and I used a 52 count pack (I think, I threw the package away without thinking I would ever blog this idea, then it turned out cute and here we are).
After you get the layers rubberbanded together, you can add your ribbon. I used a wire ribbon as well as a glittery one and just glued the glittery one down to the wired one and I used glue dots to stick the wired ribbon to the diapers. That's where the topsy turvy part came in, I probably should've checked the placement of the glitter ribbon, before gluing it down, but whatever, if you know me, you know everything I touch or do is a bit "off center" so I just left it. It added charm.... or at least that's what I'm going with.
For the bow on top, I did what most people would do... I asked my Mom and Googled it and then I just started wrapping stuff and tying the glitter ribbon around the wire ribbon hid the mess underneath. I added a few old cupcake picks I had left over from Valentine's day. I arranged it on a nice crystal cake pedestal and took it to the shower that way. Everybody loved it and I was so happy I was the only one who brought one. How embarrassing would that have been?!
